“If they had this stuff when I was in college, I never would have had to take those loans,” is something my friends hear me say many times. Technology has made writing for money more possible than at any other time in recent history. This isn’t like I graduated in the 1970s or anything–much of this stuff wasn’t available as recently as 2002 or 2003.
If you are a college student looking for a side income while working from your dorm room, maybe a disabled individual who can’t go get a labor job, or maybe a grandmother who wants an extra few dollars, this works for anyone with even average writing skills and an Internet connection.
I’m going to focus on college students, because the opportunities for you guys being college students are amazing. So where do you start writing for money online?
1) Constant Content. I love this website because you get to write about whatever you want, and set your own prices. You have to have a PayPal account, and they take a commission every time you sell an article. You have to hit $50 before they send you a payment, which they make on the 1st of every month. If you’re dedicated and can write 2-3 articles a day, this can make you some serious side money over the long run.
2) Associated Content. They’re not as good as they were a couple years ago, but they have a Pay Per View bonus that lets you make some decent money if you get a lot of visitors (and if you’re a smart sports writer, you can make a lot of money off this option). Some articles get upfront payment, others don’t, but you get money every time you get so many visitors.
3) Helium.com. This pays only by views, but you always maintain rights to your articles, and there are a lot of great contests, as well some impressive jobs they get directly from publishers that pays very well. There is a great community here, and if you build a great reputation, you may be able to start nailing jobs that take only a few hours, put pays $25-200 an article, though your normal articles will only make a minimal amount.
This is a great way to start, but it is only that – a beginning.
